Who is Celestine Omehia?

Celestine Omehia served as governor of Rivers State in Nigeria before the Supreme Court of Nigeria overturned his term in office and removed him from office. From May 29th, 2007 to October 25th, 2007, he served as governor. The People’s Democratic Party, of which he was a part, held power during his tenure (PDP). It was on September 15th, 1959 that he was born. The union between him and Mrs. Anthonia Omehia, popularly known as Itakpe, has been fruitful: they have three children: Keturah, Kelechi, and Kechikamma.

Between the months of February 1992 and November 1993, he was the state education commissioner for Rivers State. Peter Odili, who was a governor, chose him to be his adviser and appointed him to the position.

On April 14, 2007, gubernatorial elections were held in Rivers State, and he was proclaimed the winner. On May 29, 2007, he was sworn in as the governor of the oil-producing state, succeeding Dr. Peter Odili, who was also a member of the PDP.

On October 25th, the Supreme Court overturned his election, ruling that Chibuike Amaechi, not Celestine Omehia, was the legal candidate for the PDP. Even though Chibuike Amaechi had won the PDP primary, the party had to replace him at the last minute with Celestine Omehia due to suspicions of corruption. In October 2009, Celestine Omehia urged the Supreme Court to reconsider its earlier ruling; the court declined.

Celestine Omehia received both his primary and secondary school education in the state of Rivers, which is located in Southern Nigeria.

Celestine Omehia was born on September 15th, 1959 in the town of Ubima, which is located within the Ikwerre Local Government Area in the state of Rivers. Celestine Ngozichim Omehia is his full name.

From 1968 through 1973,Celestine Omehiahe studied at St. Theresa Catholic School, which later became State School 1, Ubima, where he earned his First School Leaving Certificate. After attending County Grammar School, Ikwerre-Etche from 1973 through 1978, he earned his West African School Certificate (WASC). In 1979, he enrolled in Rivers State School of Basic Studies to further his education, and by 1980, he had earned his Advanced Level G.C.E./L.J.M.B.

Between the years of 1981 and 1984, Celestine Omehia attended the Metropolitan University in Manchester, England, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Law.

In 1984, he continued his education at the University of Hull in England, where he earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in International Law after studying there for a single academic year.

After completing his education, he went home to Nigeria. After graduating with a Bachelor of Laws from the Nigerian Law School on Victoria Island in Lagos, he was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1986 and qualified as a legal practitioner by the Nigerian Bar Association. He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Celestine Omehia Career

In the years 1988 and 1990, Celestine Omehia taught law as a part-time lecturer at Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt. In addition to his work at Jubilee Insurance, he was a legal consultant and adviser in Port Harcourt. For Port Harcourt’s Pamo Clinics and Hospitals, he handled the same function. He has worked with Global Energy and Refining Limited as a legal advisor since 1999.

Besides becoming a lawyer, Celestine Omehia has written a number of excellent publications, including Law and Justice, Dismissal in Nigerian Labour Law, A New Dawn, A New Chapter, Dividend of Democracy in Nigeria: The Rivers State Experience, etc. Additionally, he served in the Parish Council of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 1992 after having served as Assistant Editor of Ondo Monthly Law Reports between 1987 and 1988.

In addition to his role as Executive Director at Ubi Investment Limited in Port Harcourt since 1992, Celestine Omehia worked in 2005 as a member of the White Paper Committee on Visitation Reports for Rivers State College of Health Sciences and Technology.

A desire to enter politics first arose in Celestine Omehia in 1999, when he joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He went on to hold various positions within the PDP, including Member of the 2000 PDP National Convention Committee and Chairman of the PDP Congress and Convention Committee in November 2001.

He never passed up an opportunity to learn something new, regardless of the subject matter, as he worked his way up the leadership ladder. Celestine Omehia participated in the Rivers State retreat for high-ranking government officials at the Port Harcourt International Airport Hotel, Omagwa, and also went to a number of workshops and seminars there. In 2004, He continued his education by attending the Senior Civil Servants Seminar for a week in New York and then the Leon Sullivan Summit in Abuja.

Celestine Omehia, on the other hand, worked for Dr. Peter Odili, the executive governor of Rivers State, in the capacity of Executive Assistant of Administration and Inter-religious Matters. In addition to that, he was appointed by the Executive Governor of Rivers State as a Special Assistant for Legal and Administrative Matters from the years 2000 till 2003. Not only that, but on April 14, 2007, he ran for Governor of Rivers State under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party and won with a resounding majority (PDP).

On May 29, 2007, Celestine Omehia took the oath of office as Governor of Rivers State after being elected to that position. He served in that capacity until the judgement handed down by the Supreme Court on October 25, 2007, which removed him from office.

Celestine Omehia is now serving as the Chairman of the Board for the African Golf Tour in addition to being a member of the Board for the Rivers State Golf Association.
