Difference Between MiFi and WiFi

MiFi and WiFi

I won’t say I did not make mistakes in these two. But the research showed me that MiFi and WiFi are both wireless internet technologies, but with differences. WiFi connects devices to a local area network and the internet, while a MiFi device uses cellular data to create a wireless network.

What is a MiFi?

A MiFi is a portable, wireless device that allows users to connect multiple devices to the internet via a cellular data network. It functions as a mobile hotspot, creating a WiFi network that smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices can use. MiFi devices are often small and compact and can fit easily in a pocket or bag, making them a popular choice for people who need to access the internet while on the go or in places with no WiFi network. The devices typically use a SIM card and a data plan from a cellular network provider, which allows them to connect to the internet and share the connection with other devices. MiFi devices are popular among travellers, business people, and anyone who needs to stay connected to the internet while on the move. They are typically easy to set up and use and provide reliable and secure internet connection. However, the speed and availability of the connection will depend on the strength of the cellular network in the area where the device is being used.

What is a WiFi?

WiFi, which stands for Wireless Fidelity, is a wireless networking technology that allows devices to connect to the internet and share data without needing physical cables. WiFi uses radio waves to transmit data between devices, typically connected to a router or access point connected to a wired internet source, such as a cable or DSL modem. With WiFi, users can connect their smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices to a local area network (LAN) and access the internet from anywhere within the network’s coverage area. WiFi networks can be set up in homes, businesses, public spaces, and other locations and can be secured with a password and encryption to prevent unauthorised access. WiFi is a popular technology that has revolutionised how we access and use the internet. It allows us to connect to the internet and share data wirelessly, making it easier to work, communicate, and stay connected wherever we are.

Difference Between MiFi and WiFi

MiFi and WiFi make wireless Internet connectivity possible, but these two technologies are distinct in several important respects. MiFi is a mobile hotspot device that enables multiple wirelessly connected devices to access the internet on the go. WiFi, on the other hand, is a type of wireless networking that facilitates communication between devices on a LAN and those on the internet. To connect to the internet, a MiFi device uses a cellular data plan from a cellular service provider to set up a wireless network. On the other hand, WiFi requires a wired internet connection via a modem and router to create a wireless network. A MiFi device can only function in areas with a solid cellular signal. However, the range of a WiFi network depends on the quality of the wireless router and the density of wireless access points in the area. The built-in security features of most MiFi devices ensure safe connections between the MiFi and the cellular network provider. Password-protected and encrypted WiFi networks are more secure than unprotected ones but still face risks like hacking and unauthorised access.
