The movie Enola Holmes is a mystery film that was released in the year 2020. The screenplay for both the book and the film were written by Nancy Springer, who also wrote the book. The tale is about the famed detective’s adolescent sister, who goes to London in search of their mother but ends up on an exciting trip instead.
Milly Bobby Brown, who plays the role of Enola Holmes in the film and also serves as the movie’s producer, is the film’s most prominent character. Henry Cavil, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sam Claflin also star in the film. the film was directed by Harry Bradbeer and written by Jack Throne.
Warner Bros. Pictures had planned a theater release, but the epidemic forced them to switch to Netflix as the film’s exclusive distributor. On September 23, 2020, the film finally hit theaters. Reviews for the film were largely favorable.
Within its first four weeks of release, Enola Holmes was seen by over 76 million households, making it the most-viewed original Netflix film of all time. The sequel, titled simply “Enola Holmes 2,” premiered on Netflix in the month of November 2022.
Enola Holmes Plot
The youngest of the Holme children is named Enola. She learned everything from chess to jujitsu from her mother, Eudoria, who also instilled in her the values of being fiercely independent and relying on herself. In contrast to the norms of the period, Enola is smart, insightful, and attentive.
The morning of her sixteenth birthday, she discovered that she had been abandoned by her mother and could not even locate the presents she had left behind. A few weeks later, Enola finally gets to meet her two older brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft. Mycroft thinks she’s a handful, and as her legal guardian, he plans to ship her off to a finishing school where Miss Harrison works, where she’ll be mentored by Sherlock, who thinks she’s a bright young thing.
She was able to escape by disguising herself as a male and following the clues on her mother’s flower-patterned playing cards, which led her to a stash of hidden money. On the train, she discovers the young Viscount Tewkesbury concealed in a suitcase. She dismisses him as an idiot at first, but then she gives him a heads-up that Linthorn is on the lookout for him. When Linthron locates Tewkesbury, he attempts murder, but Tewkesbury and Holmes manage to escape by jumping from the train. After Viscount Tewkesbury returns from his foray into the wild in quest of edible plants, he and his companions split up in London.
Eniola Holmes tracked down her mother while posing as a Victorian lady by writing cryptic letters in classified ads. She unearths explosives-stocked safehouses and manuals. She also finds out that her mother is a member of an extreme feminist organization. During their conversation regarding Viscount Tewkesbury, Linthorn attacks and starts grilling her. To defend herself, she fights back, sets off the explosives in the safe house, and then escapes.
Enola Holmes recommits herself to the mission of rescuing Viscount Tewkesbury from Linthorn. Wanting to learn more, she visited his estate and met the Viscount Tewkesbury’s grandmother there. However, Mycroft is also involved in the search for his sister, and he has Scotland Yard’s Inspector Lestrade on the case.
After some time spent looking, she locates Viscount Tewkesbury selling flowers in Covent Garden, where she proceeds to forewarn him about Linthorn. The inspector her brother had dispatched located her and whisked her away to Miss Harrison’s finishing school. Sherlock Holmes paid her a visit to express his admiration for her sleuthing skills. In the meantime, Viscount Tewkesbury secretly enters the school, and he and Miss Harrison flee in her stolen car.
When they arrived, the mansion appeared vacant, but Linthorn had set up his trap. Enola uses jujitsu to trip Lintron, resulting in a head injury. But it turns out that Linthorn’s contractor is Viscount Tewkesbury’s grandmother. She shot Viscount because she didn’t want him to follow in his father’s footsteps and support the Reform Bill in the House of Lords, but he was able to survive since he was wearing a protective shield under his clothing.
The film concludes with Enola and Viscount Tewkesbury saying their sorrowful goodbyes. The scene shows her mother’s motivations for leaving and her intention to depart again, but she also expresses pride in Enola’s development.

Enola Holmes Production
As of the beginning of 2019, Millie Bobby Brown was attached to produce and star as Enola Holmes in a film version of Nancy Springer’s The Enola Holmes Mysteries for Legendary Pictures, with Harry Bradbeer attached to helm.
Millie and her older sister Paige had read the books together, and Millie had always wanted to play the role of Enola in the play. She discussed her plans to adapt the novel with her dad and eventually formed a partnership with Legendary Pictures, the studio behind Godzilla: King of the Monsters. They had a discussion about it, and decided that the film should have a lot of action, a bit of weirdness, and a lot of feeling. She also discussed her attempts to break the fourth wall with writer Jack Throne.
Henry Cavill, Adeel Akhtar, and Fiona Shaw were among the stars she cast in June 2019. With Sam Claflin, Burn Gorman, Susie Wokoman, and Louis Patridge also starring is Helena Bonham Carter. The filming of the movie began in London, and many locations were used. To design the outfits, Consolata Boyle was called upon.
Enola Holmes Releases
Warner Bros. Pictures had planned to release the picture in April 2020, however due to the epidemic, Netflix has acquired the rights to distribute the film globally, excluding China. Its digital premiere occurred on September 23, 2020.

Variety critic Peter Debruge called the film a “entertaining franchise starter,” and he heaped praise on Millie Bobby Brown’s performance, noting that Brown’s acting evokes the fulsome spontaneity that Keira Knightley brought to Pride and Prejudice, shattering the prim propriety of so many Jane Austen adaptations before it.
A bad review was written by Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle. He said, “A bright young actress, a movie-star actor, and a potentially exciting concept gets smothered in 128 minutes of colorful, empty nonsense.”
Enola Holmes Sequel
Millie Bobby Brown and Harry Bradbeer decided to collaborate on a sequel in September of 2020. Millie Bobby Brown revealed that she had considered filming the film once, and that she would love to reprise her role because it was so much fun.
The sequel was announced on May 13, 2021, and filming began in December 2021 and wrapped in January 2022.
The first portion of the film was made available on Netflix with the exception of China.
