Nyesom Wike, born on 13 December 1967, is a prominent Nigerian political figure notable for his affiliations with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). A native of Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor in Rivers State, Wike’s illustrious career has been marked by numerous prestigious positions, including the governorship of Rivers State (2015-2023) and, more recently, the ministerial role for the Federal Capital Territory since 16 August 2023, as appointed by President Bola Tinubu.
Starting with his early education at Government Secondary School, Eneka, Rivers State, Wike advanced to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUT), where he earned his Bachelor of Laws degree. His educational journey culminated with a Master of Arts degree in Political and Administrative Studies, also from RSUT, after completing Law School in 1997.
Wike’s political endeavors began in 1999 when he was elected the Executive Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area, a position he retained until 2007. His journey saw subsequent roles, including chief of staff to the then-governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi. Elevated to the national stage, he became the Minister of State for Education in July 2011 and then assumed the role of Federal Minister of Education in September 2013.
His leadership aspirations came to fruition when 2014, he emerged as the PDP gubernatorial candidate for Rivers State, selecting Ipalibo Banigo as his deputy governor running mate. Triumphing over contenders like Dakuku Peterside (APC) and Tonye Princewill (Labour Party), Wike secured the governorship in the April 2015 elections. His tenure, however, wasn’t without controversy, as there were legal challenges surrounding the election results, though he remained steadfast in his position.
By March 2022, Wike shifted his sights towards the presidency, running under the PDP banner. However, in a tightly-contested primary held at MKO ABIOLA National Stadium, Abuja, Atiku Abubakar emerged victoriously, with Wike coming in as the first runner-up.
In 2019, under his leadership, Rivers State saw significant educational reforms. Wike pronounced primary and secondary education free, which elicited diverse reactions but remained steadfast amidst opposition. Furthermore, he advocated for local students by offering free JAMB examination registrations.
Beyond education, Wike showcased his commitment to gender equality by enacting legislation in 2022 that fortified women’s inheritance rights. He vocalized his support, urging women to assert their legal rights boldly.
During his second gubernatorial term, Wike prioritized infrastructure, launching the construction of three critical flyovers located at Garrison, Rumoukoro, and Artillery in Port Harcourt.
Wike’s nomination as minister of the FCT by President Bola Tinubu on 27 July 2023 further solidified his role on the national stage. Following his senate screening on 31 July 2023, Wike passionately declared his commitment to President Tinubu’s administration.
