Growing up in Nigeria and taking any career path that doesn’t sound appealing, like going into Medicine, Law, or Engineering, most times could cause a big problem in an average Nigerian home. Tobi has stated how she went through this, that her Dad had set her first sports kits on fire as the idea of her going into the sport was not comforting for her father.
Tobi came 4th at the World Championship in Diver with a running time of 12.82 seconds. Her father was not in support of this.
“My both parents are teachers and disciplinarians,” she said. She calls them strict; her father appeared to be severe, and her mother was her only ally at the beginning of her career.
“I would like that I was going to church just to leave the house for training.” Amusa reflects on her Dad’s conflict with her sports career.
“When you grow in such a family, they expect you to be more focused in school, as the thought of you going astray and losing focus and all that was their form of care.
My mother would always lie to cover up for me because she saw what I didn’t see in myself and always told me not to disappoint her.
One day my Dad was furious when he saw me running. He burnt all my training gear and told my mother that was the last time he wanted to see me in the stadium.” Tobi told the press.
