In 2002, Babachir Lawal joined the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and began his political career. He served in several capacities in the ANPP and on Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign team, including as Deputy Coordinator of the Buhari Campaign Organization in Adamawa State. During 2002–2005, he served as the Adamawa State Deputy Coordinator for the Buhari Campaign Organisation. Between 2005 and 2010, he served as the coordinator for Adamawa State for the Buhari campaign. He served on the Congress for Progressive Change’s National Contact and Mobilization Committee between 2010 and 2013. In 2012, she served on the Congress for Progressive Change’s Renewal Committee. He participated in the All Progressive Congress Merger Committee in 2013. From 2013 to 2014, he was a member of the All Progressives Congress Interim Management Committee. On October 30, 2017, he was dismissed from his post as Secretary to the Government of the Federation following an investigation into his possible involvement in stealing disaster relief funds.
