He was once the National Publicity Secretary for the National Republican Convention (NRC). Born on March 22, 1952, his full name is Adedoyin Ajibike Okupe. Before becoming a governorship candidate for the People’s Democratic Party in Ogun State, he was incarcerated by General Sani Abacha and excluded from UNCP primaries. Doyin Okupe has worked for two presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, as a special assistant on media and publicity and later as a senior special assistant on public affairs.

Dr Doyin Okupe is active in both medicine and politics. He served at public and private hospitals in Lagos, notably St. Nicholas Hospital, for many years before establishing the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Obalende alongside Drs. Seyi Roberts and Ladi Okuboyejo. He headed the operations at the Royal Cross Medical Centre. He also ran the newsstand for the health magazine Life Mirror. In an interview in July 2019, Olusegun Osoba said that on the evening of August 23, 1994, Doyin Okupe and Dr Seyi Roberts saved his gatekeeper’s life after being shot in the head.

Doyin Okupe, under the Second Nigerian Republic, ran for the House of Representatives in 1983 as a candidate for the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). During the time of the Third Nigerian Republic, Doyin Okupe held the position of National Publicity Secretary for the National Republican Convention (NRC). He was a member of the NRC delegation that went to the headquarters of the National Electoral Commission in 1993 to watch the tallying of votes for Nigeria’s presidential election (NEC).

Doyin Okupe was taken into custody by General Sani Abacha’s military government on October 3, 1996. Doyin Okupe was one of the politicians banned from the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries in March 1998 following Abacha’s failed transition programme.

Later, in 2002, he and Gbenga Daniel were both leading aspirants in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in Ogun State. During the 2012 presidential administration of Goodluck Jonathan, he was named President Jonathan’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs.

Doyin Okupe was the spokesman for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria’s presidential elections. He worked with Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Bukola Saraki, and Atiku Abubakar. In July 2017, he said he was leaving the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the Accord Party. Still, in September 2018, he was kicked out of the Accord Party for agreeing to lead Bukola Saraki’s campaign media council for the PDP’s 2019 presidential primaries.

Later on, Doyin Okupe went back to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which he had previously left, and became a spokesman for Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s candidate for president of Nigeria in 2019. Before the 2023 Nigerian general election, he became a member of the Labour Party and its vice presidential candidate until a more substantial candidate was chosen.
