Mikuru and his sibling Kai Asakura made their MMA debuts as amateurs for the Fighting Network Rings Outsider promotion. The Outsider brand was aimed at disturbed young people, with the primary focus on using mixed martial arts (MMA) to rehabilitate delinquents, criminals, and members of gangs. He would later fight someone from outside his group in a professional match. After defeating Kohei Shimada with a rear-naked choke in the first round of their first amateur bout, he went on to win six of his next seven bouts and lose only to Takehiro Higuchi.
