Vancouver Whitecaps FC signed Sam Adekugbe, the eighth homegrown player in the MLS, to a Generation Adidas deal on August 28, 2013. He debuted in a professional game on October 27, 2013, a 3-0 win over Colorado Rapids. During the 2015 winter, Brighton & Hove Albion, an English Football League Championship team, invited Sam Adekugbe to train with them. He signed a season-long loan with Brighton on July 15, 2016, spending his first few months with the club’s reserve team.
